North-Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited is owed over 13 million Kwacha in unpaid water bills from August 2020 to June this year.
Company Managing Director HAPPY MUSUMALI says that domestic customers owed the water utility over 11 million Kwacha while Government institutions have an outstanding bill of 2.3 million Kwacha.
In an interview with ZNBC News, Mr. MUSUMALI said the company has engaged the affected Government institutions to come up with modalities to offset the debt.
He said the company has high production costs, especially on electricity because 95 percent of its production plants are on pre-paid meters.
Mr MUSUMALI said most residential customers stopped paying water bills in 2020 during the advent of COVID-19 after Government directed water utilities that there should be no service withdrawals to ensure regular hand washing to help fight the pandemic.
