If rival fan groups physically engaged each other in Kollam’s Sakthikulangara, it was an infighting within Argentina’s fanbase in Kochi. On Sunday night, a minor disagreement over the appearance of some members of Argentina’s World Cup squad devolved into major violence.
A person’s nasal bridge was broken, a house was vandalised, and several people were injured in the violence. Before the inaugural game between Qatar and Ecuador, a group of Argentina fans camped near a bar in the Kalamassery area.
A man identified as Gireesh got into an argument with another Argentina supporter ahead of the game about the profile of some players on the squad. A member of the opposing group shoved Gireesh in the chest.
