11 killed, three injured in Enugu crash

No fewer than 11 passengers died and three others injured in a road accident on Sunday along the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Road near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla , Enugu State.

The state Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Joseph Toby, confirmed the incident on Monday.

He stated that a 14-seater bus carrying petrol rammed into a truck before bursting into flames.

Toby said the bus was carrying 12 passengers at the time of the crash, adding that 11 people died and one was injured and taken to the UNTH.

He said, β€œThe crash happened yesterday about 8.34pm, but we got the distress call around 8.44pm. As a matter of fact, the 14-seater bus was carrying 12 passengers and rammed into a truck. In the truck were two persons β€” the driver and the conductor.”

The FRSC boss said the occupants of the truck sustained varying degrees of injury.

Toby advised against night travelling, saying drivers could sleep off while driving.

Our correspondent gathered that relatives of the deceased later retrieved the bodies for burial.
